Today, one of my friends SALTY and I joined the Pittsburgh Marathon kick-off event.
It's the event organized by a local running club where non-members were also invited just for today.
(I started adding some English translations since some US people are reading this.)
-10 C = 14 F.
I was amazed to see so many people are appearing in this freezing cold temperature.
▼ASICS car
GEL-Scout
ASICS rep were there to help people try out some shoes like GT or GEL-Nimbus.
I ran with my favorite GEL-Scout though.
(Warming up)
In my rough estimate, there were 150 people or so.
People were grouped by different pace and distance, ranging between 8:00/mi - 12:00/mi and 3 - 13 miles.
(Ready, set, go!)
(Happy runners hitting the snow trail)
SALTY and I joined the 13mi @ 8:00/mi group. That was the first group that left the starting point.
More than 90% of the surface we ran was covered with snow.
This was the first time my toes felt numb while running...
After a short while starting, a 50+ yo sub-3 runner left the group!
He was so fast, running at pace 7:15/mi.
SALTY and I tried to catch up with him and we finally formed a new group.
It was so fast that I was not sure I could keep the pace.
But somehow I managed to finish staying in the group.
The average pace was 7:30/mi.
I run almost at my best given this pace and temp over the snow surface.
It's a lot of fun, with a joyful pain that hopefully develops my calf muscle and respiratory system.
Here's what organizers provided us after the training.
Banana and PowerBar -- which were frozen. I ate them after going back home :)
Iced water -- provided by a natural fridge :)
Delicious hot Burrito!
Although I'm a member of
SCRR, I wasn't active after the Pittsburgh Marathon. Coming back to this practice after a while, I realized this kind of group long run training is very helpful to practice towards marathon. I'm sure to come back again.
They usually offer 3 practices per week where long runs are on Saturdays. The annual fee is only 40 USD, which is considerably cheap as compared to training events in Japan (for instance, Gekiso in Tokyo costs 12 USD per training or 70 USD monthly). They also have nice member perks such as discounts in shops and races. If you are a steel runner and not a member yet, I encourage you to consider joining SCRR.
Although the temperature is cold outside during the winter, people were very warm here in Pittsburgh.
If you are out of Pittsburgh, come back and join the Pittsburgh Marathon in May!
(English part ends here).
